Pieceful Hearts Hickory Knob Quilt Retreat Part 2

Pat busy doing hmmm what are you doing Pat? Some people even haul their own chairs up there...i settled for a cushion.
Pam and Rachel consulting on...hmmm??? seems i dont know what i was taking pics of!
Linda maker of countless intricate miniature quilts...
Snowflakes for hmmm a Thomas Kinkaide quilt that i actually like...in fact its pretty much the only thing of his that i like...

The beginnings of one of Linda's miniatures...number 100 and WHAT linda??? and if you look to the left another of her popular halloween sunbonnet sues...
Linda's turning twenty again...different yet again
She calls it Elsie's quilt after her mom because her name is in it...or is that the name of the fabric line?

Didnt she do a great job fracturing it...she used to panels to make it.
Believe it or not a seven year old made this quilt...a brownie...part of the girl scout project that Patty does to make quilts for veterans...we've alot of those here in Augusta with Fort Gordon nearby.

And YES the seven year old quilted it...on a long arm hobby frame...well a mid arm...but didnt she do a great job...she even drew stars...talented kid!!

Now this is Pattys quilt...made from hmm is it a scrap quilt...anyway its based on one of Bonnie Hunters patters from quiltsville.com...this is truly an amazing quilt...and large...those pieces are made from 1 1/2 inch strips...tiny things...lots of tiny things....see if you can find the star blocks.

Chantels SLIGHTLY fabulous turning twenty again...swiped from Siobhan's Facebook Photos
Sharons quilt that I stole from Siobhan's Facebook photos....

Another MANIC quilter...Shelvy Miller...shes going to sell this because she doesnt like the color!! want her email address???? Bytw shes sending it out to Kathy at Quilt shop on the corner for quilting.

Our friend Paula makes prayer quilts for her church in Augusta. This is her tenth one. She makes the whole quilt then the church members come up and say a prayer and tie a knot in it. The quilt is later given to someone who they said the prayers for...isnt that a lovely thought...we are all going to help her make more on Saturday afternoon...so come and help us...she lost her assistants so we are volunteering. Detail of the prayer quilt. Back of the prayer quilt.

Hickory Knob Part 1

Kays fabulous witch doll...she still needs a name and a witches hat...Kay even knit the shawl the doll is wearing...who knew Kay knew how to knit?!

Every year our local quilt guild goes to the SC Hickory Knob State Park near McCormick SC. Its on Lake Thurmond. We rent cabins and rooms in the hotel and the big meeting room called the Barn also called the Long Cane Building after i think a revolutionary war battle near here...Long Cane is BIG in McCormick County. Anyway three days in January of sewing, fun, laughter, comraderie, wine, and of course eating...every cabin takes a turn preparing a meal while we are there...no point in going on a diet till Hickory Knob Retreat is over...

Here are some of the pics...hopefully more over the next few days...we also now have a facebook group to post all of our pictures....bytw theres more room in the Barn if you want to join our guild and come south and sew your brains out for the weekend...
Kay working on her fabulous black and white crazy quilt...NO i didnt take a pic...sorry...
Sharon is an example to us all ...she never watches tv and boy does she turn out the quilts...she even sews with migraines that would put the rest of us in bed! I wish i had taken a picture of this one too ...its a gorgeous thing made from aborigine fabric....

Thats the two Paulas in the background...two more diligent quilters..I hear we now have THREE paulas... Rachel ( I dont know whats the matter with her!!!) Kay and Kim...havent you finished your block yet Kim???
Dana's Hoochy Mama blocks from the class that i taught back in December at Branums. This class was based on Mary Lou Wiedman's book.

Dana and her doll that is telling her GET me DRESSED...ITS cold outside...dont you know its supposed to snow...where are they?

Sharon is an example to us all ...she never watches tv and boy does she turn out the quilts...she even sews with migraines that would put the rest of us in bed!

Pat Wooke working on her fabulous PAPER PIECED Mariners Compass Quilt.

This is a better shot of it although the colors are dark...its much brighter...this is about half of the quilt.

Connie Sewing on her circle quilt...one jillion circles to go

Kim being diligent working on her raffle quilt block...this group does some absolutely gorgeous applique...the quilt is based on Piece of Cakes Fruit Quilt ...yes we got permission! Let me know if you want a ticket...the proceeds go to Camp Rainbow, a camp for kids surviving with cancer.
Rachel patting her fabrics into place. The ladies quilt is her quilt. She did a great job getting it together and getting the characters drawn!

She wanted to claim that yummy quilt behind her but it is Chantals turning twenty AGAIN...best thing about those is they look great in any colors...but batiks and Kaffe Fassett Fabrics are my favorites in this sooo easy quilt...we unanimously agree that the plain jane turning twenty is BORING...the pieces are tooo big to be interesting...but get some jazzy fabric and try a turning twenty again next time you have to make one of those TO DO quilts...like for a baby or a wedding...they will love them..ask me how i know?! And if you work hard you can make a king sized quilt top in a day...at least a twin...really....

Here are a couple of mine in case you dont believe me Kaffe (scroll down thru the post to see the turning twenty kaffe quilt) and flea market fabrics from People Places and quilts...my mom loves this one o yeah and an african fabric one...appropriate for today

Mary Verdery's Quilt Kit from People Places and Quilts Shop in Summerville and Charleston SC...they do such a good job packaging their products....and are not to be missed if you are driving down I26 to Hilton Head. They believe in keeping your husband comfy and fed while you shop:>
This quilt was designed by Diane Frankenberger and is made with Kaffe Fassett fabrics...shes so good at presentation and designing funky folk art quilts.

You can also tour the shop on one of my old blog posts...LOTS of pictures!

Mary with the box all tied up!

Inside Mary's quilt kit from People Places and Quilts. Dont you love that tissue paper and isnt the layout just well darn yummy!!! I WANT I NEED!!!! DIANE can I HAVE ONE?!
The twins...Mary Verdery on the left and Catty on the right...shes the naughty one...Cat comes up from near Charleston every year to play with us...hmmm sometimes shes leading the play...see the naughty twinkle in her eye?

The twins deciding on that flip flop quilt ...these ladies have lucky grandchildren...they turn out the cutest bright funky quilts for them by the stack.

Did I say that we have at least THREE sets of twins in our guild..IDENTICAL...

Moooorreee coming...this only has taken me TWO hours to do...SMOOSHY HUGS...Maggie dahling in sc where its been snowing for THREE hours now...or is it four...and we have a new president!

WHAT I did at Hickory Knob

After embellishments

Before embellishments

Well first i had a fight with the toilet paper and lost...to make a long story short...i am pretty sure i had an acute allergy attack brought on by using toilet paper because i didnt have any kleenex...because as soon as i quit using the toilet paper the allergy attack was over...well mostly ...but because i was sneezing so much and had no kleenex i used if for FIVE hours on Saturday getting sicker and sicker ...as in nonstop sneezing....till i gave up on it and got a towel...amazingly that was the end of the allergy attack...BET Hickory Knob stores that stuff in a mildewy storage room...ANYWAY...so by the time i felt like joining in the fun...i only felt like visiting...and i was visiting with my Dear friend Rachel who always has a bazillion shoulda outta woulda projects ...one of these was to make 50th birthday quilts for a singles group she belongs too...
After embellishments
Feeling a little perkier and not wanting to pin any quilts together (all I had brought to do) OR knit some more on my sweater I volunteered to help her with her project...the eight friends sitting or standing around a sofa...so ten hours later its finished...we had alot of fun picking out the thread...all that kreinek thread outlining the ladies was couched...doubled up and couched for that matter...with invisible YLI thread. I outlined the ladies hands and legs and necks with brown cotton thread...we were using what we had....thread painted their hair with whatever we could scavenge from our dear friends...who also produced cat buttons, wild threads(Dana) and lace and antique ricrack for the napkins(Kay).....finished it up about 1 p m today with a few beads from our collections ands strings of ribbon roses that Rachel forgot she had brought ........

OH the quilting...done by a lady over in Laurens SC...she charged Rach $20 for the job and did a terrific job...dont you love the windows and the floor boards...I am thinking she used a pattern for the boards ...they are so even but she did a lovely job on those...curtains look like they were free handed...

Anyway Rachel's friend Kathy will be getting a surprise birthday present this Friday...I am SOOO glad i helped because it was too much fun...Kathy's going to be 57...so shes been waiting a while....tonite we sew the binding down...where are my needles:>

Stay tuned for more from the Pieceful Hearts Hickory Knob Quilt Retreat!!

Oops i forgot

I promised my friend Marsha I would post a picture of her beloved pincushion on my blog in hopes that someone out there has a pattern for it or the source for the pattern. A friend made this for her along time ago.

It looks like paper pieced diamonds and is quite large for a pincushion...about 8" tall ...like a big star...and its stuffed so its almost as hard as a rock. She THINKS she wants to make one....

VICTORY IS AT HAND IF i can keep the caps lock OFF...Diana Feit found these links to the pincushion...or is it a child's ball...would work for either...

The Treasured Star
Includes Complete Instructions and Stencil
Mfg: Phillips Fiber Art
Design by Cheryl Phillips & Brooke Jeschke

Rhombic Hexecontahedron
Hand stitched. 4 inches tall.

Thanks Diana!!

This is Marsha with her halloween sunbonnet sue quilt that she bought from our friend Linda Yehle who hand appliques these little beauties and sells them for $50...there is also a Christmas version...i think she needs to do Easter dont you? Linda has enough scraps at her house to feed a third world country...we give her all our tiny pieces so she can quest for the perfect sunbonnet sue hat...you never know when that tiny flower will be just the right touch for a hat or a dress...bytw I dont know how many sunbonnet sues shes made but shes made over 100 of her double wedding rings...i am thinking this is her 101 sunbonnet sue...

Sharon took my hoochy mama quilt class at the local quilt store about a month ago...shes done with the top...this is one of several she had in her bag....I know why she gets so much done...she had a severe migraine when she took the class...we all tried to send her home but she wouldnt go...she had at least half of these blocks done when the class was over...WAY TO GO SHARON! She is great at persevering...says it dates back to her dj days when she was the whole show on the radio and she had to do it whether or not she felt like it....frankly I would have been in bed....BYTW this was based on the Hoochy Mama book by Mary Lou Wiedmann.

BYTW its all made with hand dyes...well the stars and the churn dashes!

What do do with your leftover yarn

this first hat was knitted with the leftover noro yarn that i had discarded from various projects either not liking the color with the colorway or didnt want black or grey in them. Theres a lot of those colors in some noro color ways...and if they dont run right.as in if they are tied into the skein instead of being spun into the skein it does NOT look good...or if you are going for a bright colored hat...who wants black or greyed colors...but all together they look great dont they??? and i know just the person who is getting this hat...she will love it because the top knot colors are all hers.

Hat #9 Leftovers-the handsome guy on the right is my middle son....

mom, and two twins.....
HAT #10
for my nieces and their mom my sil in athens...i can say if you are using worsted either use a smaller needle or double up the worsted...going to go double on the next one i think....my favorite has been either the noro or the lambs pride worsted which is thicker than alot of worsted weights...

OH a suggestion...if you get hooked on these hats...how about donating HAIRY hats to the chemo cap people...some people would love it ...others might not...guess it would have to be on a personal choice basis...but so far if they will wear a hat they think these are GREAT!!!!

And just for fun..the future owner of the leftover hat gave me a snow lady for Christmas...and I found two more at TJMaxx...I meant to give them as Christmas presents but they are so full of life insouciant that i just had to keep them...arent they just full of joy?
