Day 193 - Life model

Wednesday is life modeling day. Calling this Lady in Mink.

I started with a pencil contouring sketch.

Then a  flesh colored wash of cad red medium and cad yw light allover her face including the eyes, neck and chest. The Quin Rose was added on cheeks and nose and no hard edges were left on it.
A Close Up!

The Hair is aureolin and yellow ochre w burnt sienna and ultramarine shadows. The edges of the hair are lost on the shadow side by painting the left edge out.

Shadows are mostly burnt sienna. Sometimes I added a touch of cerulean to grey them out a little.

Eyelashes are burnt umber and ultramarine blue. Eyes cerulean w a little burnt umber.

The mink - burnt sienna and burnt umber and ultramarine blue. Ultramarine blue for the shadows.

Background cerulean and yellow ochre.

Tip - Get Charles Reid's portrait video and watch it everytime before you do a watercolor portrait. 👍👍

Thanks for looking!!

Day 191 - Hogfish Grill review!

This restaurant was so good we went THREE times. It's reasonably easy to get seated without a really long wait. On the water. Great service. Good food all in an open air grass hut.

Funky bar. This was done with watercolor  pencil. I really don't like WC pencils. Think it would look better in slurpy washes of watercolor.

Here's the whole double page spread.

Thanks for looking.

Day 191 - Sketchbook Skool homework

Homework Draw outside. Hmm it was very cold. 14 degrees. So I sat in the car and drew. Where there's a will there's a way right?!
The fountain at DJ and Co. It outgrew the page. I had intended it to fit on one ove. HaHAHAHA. I could not get it on the page this way. It outgrew it.  Oops.  Better planning needed.

I then got the brilliant idea to color all that white space yellow. BIG mistakes.  The lettering was done with Noodlers Bulletproof Ink. It went crazy smearing. Finally I taped a new sheet of paper over it.  First I painted it yellow and THEN I letters it.

After this disaster I drew another.

I actually painted this one first.  I usually paint when I get home. Normally I would paint the failure first to try out colors. DUH not this time.  Got the bright idea to paint the background a dark cobalt to make the fountain pop. The letters ran. DUUUHHH. Finally I painted the background with cerulean mixed with Winsor permanent white gouache. Better but still not
Great. I may redraw this one yet!  Maybe in pencil for the other homework assignment?!
Trying to do a journal page or two about what I did during the week. More Danny Gregory homework?!

And this guy. Well it didn't have to be buildings did it? Drew him in the middle of a local Cafe. He reminded me
So much of The Donald so I had to draw him!

Thanks for Looking!!

Day 190 - El Meson de Pepe

Watercolor in my Moleskine watercolor journal. Pen Noodler Creaper w bulletproof black ink.

Decided to journal about our Key West adventures adding to the pictures I did at the different restaurants.  We heard good things about El Meson de Pepe on Wall Street. Off to a good start. Great view great ambience. We waited and waited.  No service. Finally got service. Terrible margarita. No water. Waited and waited for our food. Order wrong. Food was not good. Expensive tough conch fritters.  Scallops drowned in olive oil and of course the food was pricey. We are in Key West but we didn't even get a decent Margarita. I think they forgot the liquor. .

The view from our table. A great huge banyan growing over a wall. And chickens and bikes. Loved the view. Not the plce.

Day 189 - We LOVE B.O.'s Part 2

The pages are watercolor pencil and some gouache.

The full double page spread.

And now you can compare both double page spreads. I can't decide which I like best.  I liked the bid sketch best till I did the journal page. It's one of my fav journal pages.

Day 188 - We LOVE B.O.'s

In my moleskine watercolor with my Noodler creaper my lamy vista fine and my Pentel brush pen. The journal page is done with regular watercolor wet on wet.  The other pages are watercolor pencil and gouache.
A journal page abt B.O.'s Fish Wagon. It really is a pile of junk but the food is fresh and delicious. Money back guarantee!   Beer flows freely.

Some of the junk that makes up B.O's.

Here's the whole double page spread. More B.O's tomorrow. Can u tell I like it?!

Day 187 - Bits and Bobs

This is a sketch of the view from the worst ever Cuban restaurant in Key West. Lucky for them I can't remember the name. Had great ambience but the service was terrible, the conch fritters were hockey pucks and the margaritas watery. It did have a great view of the back of the theater where a large banyan had engulfed a wall.  And of course there were chickens and the favored mode of transportation the bike!!

Colors. Lovely gray is piemonite and Zoitite. Greens lots of Aurelian and cerulean base. With green apatite

One of the restaurant customers. I painted her in just a few minutes. The hair is Quin Sienna and ultramarine blue.  Not sure what green the shirt is. Maybe Virginian w more ultramarine blue. Skin cad light w aureolin yellow and cerulean shadows.   Maybe those classes with Charles Reid are clicking in?! One can hope. Thanks for looking.

Day 186 - Getting things done

Have lots of Key West drawings to get finished.

Here's the double page spread in my Key West Moleskine WC journal done with my Noodler Creaper and watercolor pencil. It represents things we did or saw in Key West.

Close up.  Can you find the famous cat? Has his eye on a chicken. They help keep the federally protected chickens under control.

Eat at Blue Heaven for deliciousness. Best eggs Benedict ever topped with pink Shrimp. Yummm. The chickens enjoyed bits of our English muffins.

The Conch Train. Did we ride it
? No but if fit better than the Trolley which we did ride.

The floats are ripped from the walls of BO's Fish Wagon. Another delicious spot.

The trees and flora were exotic. Pothos also called philodendron grew outside w leaves a foot apart. Norfolk pines 100 feet tall.

Chickens everywhere!!  Endless assortments of palms.

The iconic lighthouse with the required drink. More floats for cherries or olives. Gotta have a conch now endangered on the island. Another chicken!!

There are three modes of personal transportation on the island walking , a bike or a scooter. This guy on his snazzy red scooter caught my eye at a light on Duval. Oh iguanas. A scourge devouring anything and everything but it fit the space!!

Thanks for looking!!

Day 185 - a little coloring and a little journaling

One think about doing black and white sketches is that it's like making your own coloring book.  Speaking of which time to get busy coloring some of those key west pics. Last nite I drew some and colored some.
Think this looks a lot better colored. Love the bright yellow background. The white in Danny's sideburns was done with white correction tape. I like the effect!   I went over the letters with my Pentel brush pen.
A few happenings in my life yesterday. Watching CBS Sunday morning with my sons dog Livia. She kept trying to ignore me. I took my grandson the last of his Christmas yesterday. The toolkit was a hit. He and his dad are fixing things around the house together. He LOVES hanging out with his daddy.  Most of the letters are done with my Pentel brush pen.

And then I watched Downton while I colored my coloring book. Irresistible not to draw some of the denizens of Downton. Odd poor Miss Hughes looks all wrong yet she looks like herself.
That's it for tonite. Most of the letters are done with my Pentel brush pen.

Thanks for looking.

Day 184 - I bet you know him

When I was in school I loved to read or doodle instead of paying attention. I guess not much has changed. I drew this while I was watching Danny Gregory doing his SBS Beginnings. Perfect? No- but recognizable I think. Drawn in ink in my S&B Alpha. Could not correct obvious goofs like one eye larger than the other but I was doing this at 11 pm. Usually I am asleep by then. And like our pets he kept moving. Sometimes there, sometimes a sketchbook or drawing shoes instead. No color because I was under a white i mean totally white quilt. Bulletproof ink was daring enough!! Time for another quick sketch before Downton Abbey!! Thanks for looking!!

Day 183 - Still sketching

In my watercolor moleskine with my Noodler Creaper with Noodlers Bulletproof ink.
Setting about the layout of a moleskine watercolor that made me want to draw a double page iguana. The layout just called for one big iguana!! Yes I admit I used pictures.  They sit in the grass around the condos and I am extremely allergic to grass. Their heads poke up above the grass ever vigilant for food. There are so many they devour the vegetation to the ground.  Think deer when u think iguana.  I hear they taste like chicken.

This is a compilation of all things Key West. I blocked it in with a pencil but added bits and pieces as I thought of them to fill in the page. At some point I switched pens!

Here it is reinked. Think it will be a lot of fun when it's colored.

Day 182 - in Transit

Back to the real world. Not nearly as much fun but lots more Key West sketches to share
The Bistro. Good breakfast. Not as good as Blue heaven but a laid back spot where you can people watch at the street front bar or dream the day away on the tucked away patio over a cup of coffee or tea.  It will get watercolor not wc pencil so I can play with the colors.
It's really a double page spread drawn with my Noodler Creaper Ahab Flex in my Wc moleskine. I have a whole moleskine I am using for Key West.

The next two are sketches of every day Key West happenings to be added too.
Scooters.  Can't wait to paint this a swath of bright red. Everybody rides scooters or bikes in Key West.
Chickens abound because they are protected.  You say HUH?! The federal
Government declared all birds on the island protected in their great wisdom forgetting it included the chickens brought over by him was it Bahamians or The Cubans?!  No you can not have chicken for dinner!!  How many ways can you spell illegal?!  Thank goodness for the cats and hawks that help keep them in check.
Original dachshund parade pen sketch. Thought u might like to see it. Hopefully not again!

Day 181 -The Trees

First post of the New Year! Hard to believe I started this blogathon over half a year ago now. Never thought it would last this long!!  Watercolor pencil,Tombow pens in my watercolor Moleskine.
These are two of the indigenous trees on Key West. I drew them while I sat on Whitehead St waiting for my my sister who was on the phone. You never have a chance to be bored of u have a sketch book.

These two trees are fascinating. The Kapoks can be huge. Covered with pink mimosa like flowers or pods that actually can be used to stuff life preservers because kapok floats. The trees are very twisty and often have huge winglike butresses to hold the big trees up. The Banyan at banyan House covers the entire yard. ONE tree. It spreads by dropping runners which root and become tree trunks. This one is huge and is swallowing the yard and the house. You can stay in the house a bnb called the Banyan house.

Happy New Year!! Thanks for looking!!
