A sea change - an artist becomes a fiber artist

My friend and artist Jeffery Callaham is getting ready for a show at the AIken Center For the Arts in February 10 and decided to try something new...he is presenting some of his art just as the original charcoal sketch...after much discussion and getting my HUGE bag of scraps that I use for all my scrappy projects he decided to edge them with quilting squares...He felt like a kid at Christmas playing with all the colors in my bag...full of batiks and Kaffe Fassetts to name a few...scraps from all the qulit tops i did last summer and fall...did I say he already knows how to sew...he went to hmm is Bauder Fashion College in Atlanta and interned with Mary McFadden in NYC....so yes the guy does know how to sew...

He was a little rusty with rotary cutting...not the same technique as the dressmaker approach...but he got the hang of it in no time...he and Connie played with the fabric all last weekend at Hickory Knob at our quilt retreat...he was sooo surprised to see that there were a large group of people who loved color as much as he did...he was in hog heaven...and everyone lovedd him...hes such a gentleman and a truly nice guy...another added benefit was all the eating that went on...I mean what guy does not enjoy getting invited to eat lasagna?? followed by awesome deserts like Linda Yehles killer chocolate cake ...to see more of the quilt retreat...go to my friends Kim's blog

All the ladies are hoping he comes back to play SOON with them...

The first attempt at blocks...sewing strips of color together and then cutting them into blocks. Jeff has definitely got a wild sense of color...

Connie sewing away on some of the strips they picked out

Number two under construction...sorry blogger will NOT rotate this darned picture...who knows WHY?!
I really like the use of the cool blues on this one...a funeral, mourning painting

I think the figure on the right is soo powerful...and shes just hanging up the laundry...
another porch drawing of Jeff's grandmothers house....alot of porch sitting goes on in McCormick SC...watching the world go by....bytw the strip of red Kaffe Fassett with the orange flowers...my friends were ready to kill to get that out of my "scrap" bag....it was the edges off the back of a queen sized quilt that I have been quilting off and on for the last week...
