EDM draw a bridge challenge

since we did those texture drawings last week i had wanted to try some more but not had time...I used vertical lines to do the first one. This is a bridge that is a skywalk over to the bus depot in Athens GA ....it starts somewhere near the Classic Center parking garage I think...

I took alot of pictures of streetlife and buildings in Athens while i was there...and any and all bridges so that i could do this challenge...
I used my viewfinder to crop the center of this picture which was on my laptop...never printed it out...makes it easier to view the picture when the laptop is sitting upright on the table near you...This was done with a variety of B pencil 2B, 4B, 5B, 6 and 8.

Based on a photo that i took thru a window while i was wandering around the Classic Center looking at the art collection instead of sitting on the hard chair crammed in like sardines at the lecture i was supposed to be at...three hours on that chair was more than i could do...and evidently three hours of doing value studies with just horizontal lines was too much too..not sure this one is done but for now it is DONE!:> I mean have you ever tried to draw a tree or a bush with JUST vertical lines...its NOT easy....

EDM Ice Cream Challenge

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEN

Today is my son Bens birthday...hard to believe he's 29...where did the years go...

The month of June is full of birthdays at our house...five of them...three sons, my sister in law and my mother in law...but Ben's is first...he used to get upset that his birthday always took second place to whoever was graduating...but thats a thing of the past with early school endings around here...graduation has moved up a week...last week...

We are off momentarily to shop for his present and then onto a great dinner at either the Snug...great steaks or the new restaurant thats the hit around town PF Changs...at the mall...no i didnt say at the mall did i? A fun busy day...

every year he gets a Dairy Queen Ice Cream cake and this year is no exception...so i did a quick painting of one for his birthday...if you havent tried one you should..completely made from their low fat ice cream...based on a pic of thier cakes on their website...done with wc pencil and ink in my wc moleskine...got a feeling its not staying in there though!!

EDM Challenge 165 AGAIN

So i redrew this and journaled the stories about our house...I took this with my Kodak Z650....it tends to focus near the center of the page....so the edges are slightly blurry...this was the best of the four pictures that i took....

EDM Challenge 164 Draw your camera

This is the first camera i ever used and my most current camera...i dropped the one in the last sketch on the floor so i bought a new one....and NO i am NOT going to drop this one...its about a year old...and works great..my third digital...still have the other two but never use them...an old mavica which uses a floppy disk...8 years old..archaic technology right?! And huge compared to this one!

When i was a kid my mother gave me the old family brownie box camera that looked like this one which was drawn from a picture on wikipedia...they are copyright free...i took it to camp...lots of black and white pictures...later i got a cool mini35 millimeter from my dad...he called it idiot proof because it was autofocus...it was my first real camera....

Something old and something new

This is a sketch i did of my other camera when i first joined edm for EDM challenge 62 ...i drew it twice...first I drew a contour drawing and then i drew the real camera....so i am posting it for EDM challenge ...is it 163 or 164? Draw a camera....one of the sketches in my first moleskine...almost two years ago...how could it be that long ago? And i wonder what challenge 62 was...yeah i know theres a list but i would have to go get the list and its sounding like more trouble than its worth!

So you wont feel cheated with OLD stuff...heres something new!

A recent sketch of one of the kids...i had to watch her as she did her work......and I did very carefully! it was either sketch her or fall asleep watching her work and work and work

The view from my window EDM challenge

This is the view out one of our den windows...I guess i need to draw the view out all of our windows they are all so different but the birds love to sit on the branches of these trees...Saturday a bright cardinal rested for a minute or two...and no the branches are NOT growing into the house...just thought it would be fun to draw them that way...the windows on the front of the house are quite narrow...two feet across so i made the "gun slit" wider!:>

Yellow challenge

Hmmm this did start as my yellow everydaymatters challenge...i was going to paint the squash...but instead it turned into more Summers Bounty...bytw i think its funny that the squash were the easiest part of this to paint...and WHY didnt i pick out some interesting really crooked summer squash??? OH well..these wc are getting expensive buying fruit and veggies to paint...better get them eaten:>

My questions...too much NOT like a watercolor...colors to dense??? TOO realistic??? or does that matter...and background...should there be one...this is about 14x11 Canson watercolor journal

Painted on wc paper with W&N wc and DS wc....div>

So we have made it to day 19!!!

I could not find anything stone or rock no matter how i looked this weekend...drove 60 miles round trip and saw one small rock outcropping on the side of the road AND this church in McCormick SC...its a very charming smallish stone church...the church is all a yellowy stone held together with cement...everything else was big chunks of granite or railroad bed...nothing interesting as this church so here it is:>

And boy the scanner is giving me a fit...maybe its getting tired??? All of this work its had to do this month:>

no idea the denomination of the church....this is as fancy as it gets in McCormick SC!:> Probably methodist or presbyterian since its NOT the biggest church in town!

Day 18 and

how many more days are there...its like the end of school...THIRTEEN:>

This is a picture i painted for a friends birthday today...its of her two pitbulls wilbur and charlotte. I found the picture of them while i was surfing her blog a while back and thought that would clean up to be a great painting or cp sketch for kim for her birthday. She loves her babies like crazy..her furkids...

Is anyone ever satisfied with thier work...I started to do some more to this today...but decided wrap it and leave it...the brown dog Charlotte...could have been redder I think and i really dont like what i did to the deck...its too heavy handed i think ...needs some white showing thru...but at 1 in the morning...welll mistakes get made:> and overall I know she will love it...so thats what counts right??

May tenth...

how many more days are left??? I was actually freaking out today thinking i had left this sketch at work...and my moleskines...thinking HOW can i go a WHOLE weekend without them..heading to graduation...aka hooding in law school tomorrow...and didnt want to have to go and pick all THREE moleskines up..the kids were "reading them" today...this is in my small wc moleskine...After school i taught a couple of the kinderkids how to draw people and they really did a stellar job...wish i had brought them home to scan for you...these kids drawings are really outstanding...even compared to older kids in the school....

This is a sketch of the wiggle worms wiggling waiting for lunch...finished it up while i was supposed to be at lunch..drawing is much more slimming than eating:> Watercolor in my small moleskine...they are sitting on a bright primary colored rug waiting for everyone to finish washing up for lunch...drew the figures first and then the background...when they had left for lunch...the three little girls in this picture have turned into quite the artists...drawing loads of pigtailed girls...with butterflies and flowers...the fifth graders would LOVE to draw like they do!

Is it day number nine already??? & Challenge 118

Hair...i am counting this one as my hair challenge!!Emily in a ballet pose...this was taken probably at 1 am ...we were playing around with my new mac book pro...you know PHOTO booth...if you have never tried it ...go to your nearest mac dealer and try it out...great fun....and we stayed up wayyy tooo late playing with it...

Well i think i futzed around longer with this one but i did let it dry first in between layers of paint...around her mouth got a little ummm splotchy???but its not bad...and it rather looks like her...my sons fiance....you know ...the one whos graduating from law school Friday:> Shes no slouch herself...working on her phd in nanophysics...which is some kind of microscopic physics..inventing a microscopic computer...for ...i dont know what....i will just paint them and record their travails...

Day Eight in may

OK so these are not so exciting...but i did draw them in public...in fact one of the teachers at the table WATCHED me draw these...and i wasnt even nervous...which in itself is kinda interesting..
Dont you think the lady on the pink paper just looks so sad..she was very heavy....and all of her lines were droopy...she was immaculately dressed and groomed though...nails done, hair just so...

day umm Seventh day of may?

This started out as QUITE a good sketch of my youngest son drew...did i say hes graduating from law school Friday...oops dont let him here me say that...he will get me for ah hem"bragging" or at least thats the way he sees it...guess i am supposed to say my son ...doesnt do anything?

Anyway i was goign to paint it when i was not tired but then i reread Charles Reid's watercolor secrets...the part about painting people.....he said the reason to do loose contour drawings of whoever you want to paint is so that you have alot invested in keeping the picture faithful to the subject...so he gave me permission to slap some paint on...I can tell you drew never looked like this even at halloween...but it was fun! Funny thing it does have an air of drew about it just like the book said...but I think hes really alot cuter dont you...:> Hmm maybe i do need to try again when i ahve more time...at least i got day 7 done...off to bed...good nite all!

Trying to upload AGAIN

Sorry to confuse everyone...I thought i had done this RIGHT last nite but had gotten some really ODD message from blogger saying it wasnt going thru...and then it acted like it uploaded...now its nowhere to be found...sooo here goes again!!!

EDM Challenge 117-Something Round

These small green balls have been all over the driveway and yard alot lately...But i had no idea what they were. The rain in the last three days knocked down a jillion more. Going out to check the mail yesterday i picked one up and though...perfect for the round challenge...such a strange looking thing...still wondering WHAT they were....we have so many different trees in our "woods" it was hard to tell....

By the time I got back to the front steps I found the answer to my question...a tip of a branch knocked down with the little ball on it still...SWEET GUM was the culprit...one day these were all going to be the big ouchy prickly balls that fill the yard up in the fall...

OH Charles Reid wanna be again...splattered and dripped....I first painted the leaves a yellowy green and then painted darker colors over each one...I got more proficient as I went...the top ones are the last ones I did...well not quite...the branch was last...and all those charles reid drips of paint that I love...hes got to be painting on an easel vertically...at least thats the only way i can get the paint to run and drip!

Daniel Smith WC in my big wc molie..decided to give it a chance with real wc...not pencils and it worked very well....I do think this needs something on the left side..not sure what bbuttttt we shalls ee!!

ANOTHER MAY sketch & EDM Challenge

this is day five isnt it??? And this is my EDM challenge 117 i think??? These small green balls have been on the driveway off and on for a month now. Todays rain knocked down ALOT of them. On my trip back from the mailbox i picked one up thinking it would be the perfect round item for this weeks round challenge. I was wondering what tree these came from...we have so many different kinds in our "woods" -oak, sweet gum, black walnut, persimmon. By the time i got to the front steps I knew which one it was...i found this...too bad I already did the green challenge twice...i could have rolled them into one with this!:>

Meant to make the drips...on my big wc molie...then dripped paint on it...and used unexpected colors like the red...this time of the year theres no red on a sweet gum leaf! For some reason the scanner ate the right side of the scan...oh well...my attempt to Charles Reid some sweet gum leaves...he did say to paint anything...that anything could be beautiful?!

well is this day two or three of may...

l

JUST FOR FUN

what day in may is this anyway??? the third?? right?? okay so far i am one drawing ahead for the month now...my poor molie is languishing in my bag this week...
THE BEGINNING
OKAY so WHY did i post three sketches...two of which you have seen...they are all the same little girl...so you could see how shes changed...i still think my fav one is the one from the back..something about a little kid curled up that is just SOOO cute!
THE END
I really like the sketchier look but it seems to get an exact likeness you have to shade with your pencil...not sure i like that but she turned out like a twin...hmmm how artistic is it to do a portrait that is close to a photo of a person??? ANYWAY problems with the first one..her nose was too long...almost always do that...her mouth ...now how did i do this ...her mouth was OFF center...poor baby...and her eyes were a hair or two too wide...fixing that got her to come out and visit...and it is like they are coming out to visit you when they appear on the paper looking just like themselves...its always such a surprise to me ...dont know why ...when they appear!!!

THis is the last of the sketches for mothers day ...thank goodness...and this one looks JUST like him too..he was not nearly the pain the little girl was although in real life its just the opposite...shes a sweety and hes a little on the fiesty side.

ANYWAY thats it the end KAPUT ...HALLELUJAH all 17 of them are done...

Something green challenge Part deux

This is what i call a grid...it started with that old sesame street song...its not easy being green ...i was going to write the words around green pictures till i realized that more than 10% would be a copyright violation soooo i loooked up green words...the same day i had taken a picture of the mama cardinal in the greenbriar or smilax as Martha Stewart calls it...she was in front of my parking place in the bushes the other day...and i thought she would be perfect for a part of a green grid...so i thought of other green animals around here...the tree frogs like to get on our sliding glass windows in the summer to eat the bugs...they are so cute with thier bright green skin and their skinny toes...and the chameleons as we call them around here...beautiful emerald green and luna moths...they occasionally come to our sliding glass doors to the light at night...they are soo lovely...a little large for a tree frog to eat!!!
