Bookmaking class on the river

the first of the two small journals i made on Sunday...well i finished one of them today...which is monday...these are handbuttonhole stitched, with soft covers stiffened slightly with peltex, an embroidery stabilizer. The papers in these are writing weight Eaton Bond Linen weave paper in a cream color....the button is an antique square button and the closure is made from a ripped strip of batik...

small journal hand made book, originally uploaded by maggieinsc.

Sunday afternoon we met at my house for another Maggie book binding class...i was sooo busy helping Ille and Mary and Kim that i did not take many pictures..They are easy to make with 6-8 signatures stitched in pamphlet stitch to a soft fiberarts cover....these are the ones i made while showing them how to make the signatures, do the covers, butthohole stitch and how to decorate them...it was funny we were all trading fabric, threads, buttons...Kim bought tons of old antique mostly pearl buttons...so heavy it split the bag they were in

5.5 x 4 inches small journal book with 64 pages of cream colored Eaton Linen weave Bond watermarked writing paper , hand embroidered edges, antique pearl button, hand made beads- see posts below for the rest of this book...i used flicker to post it...it was taking TOO long!

the back of the journal

the inside of the journal showing the cream colored linen weave eaton bond paper...lovely for writing on

The small molekine sized drawing book filled with strathmore 80 lb drawing paper...dont you love the cover...those white strings DO have to go though...might just color them with a red permanent marker..dont laff it will work...the threads wrapped arond it are a great compbination fo two fabulous yarns.one a noro cord and i am not sure what the other is is so mixed up

The inside showing the strathmore drawing paper

The front cover with our signature plates...sewn on by machine

The beginnings of Illes book...she was so busy being generous sharing her fabric that she did not save enough of the one she wanted to use to do this book...so she used a lovely blue floral print by Martha Negley of Westminster fabrics...this is a very large sketch book filled with 80 lb strathmore drawing paper...7X8.5 inches i think...a BIG stack of it...NICE papers...and she did such a good job cutting her signatures...count on ille to be VERY accurate...every one of them lined up...i fear mine never will:>

NOw to bed...teaching a free motion quilting class tomorrow..thats like drawing on top of a quilt!

I make lots of books, but I WISH I could do these fabric-ey ones. Trouble is, you need a stash, and I don't have one.
